Evelyn Ruth Fitzgerald, the daughter of Mandick and Alma (Thornbloom) Olson, was born May 11, 1922 in Alta Vista, Iowa. She attended school in Dodge Center, graduating as Valedictorian with the class of 1940. Evelyn worked for the next few years at a bank and with the natural gas company in Dodge Center until she played the organ at a mission church with Robert Fitzgerald as its pastor.

The two created a wonderful friendship helping the church grow, and began dating. Evelyn and Robert were united in marriage on October 10, 1948 at Faith Lutheran Church in Dodge Center. They worked side by side, serving the Lutheran Church in Minnesota and Iowa for many years. Evelyn also worked on tax preparations for H&R Block, as a secretary and bookkeeper for the Good Samaritan Home in Estherville and as secretary for 14 years in Nashua at the law office of Leslie Turner. In 1993, Charles City became their permanent home.

Evelyn was a member of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church where she was involved in several organizations. She was also a member of the Charles City Women’s Club and served on the board for the Starr Home. Evelyn loved listening, playing and singing music, was an avid reader, enjoyed getting together with her friends (who meant the world to her), playing cards and traveling. The family would vacation every summer and visited many places throughout the United States. One of the highlight trips taken by Evelyn and Robert was a tour of Europe.

Living family members include her two daughters: Eileen (Thomas) Brown of Granger and Kathy (Russell) DiLello of Glen Gardner, New Jersey.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Robert.
