Lester Nauman

October 24, 1925 - August 13, 2018

Lester Emmett Nauman, 92, of Floyd, died Monday, August 13, 2018 at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

A funeral service for Lester Nauman will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 17, 2018 at Zion Lutheran Church in Rockford with Pastor Robert Scheurer officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Rudd.

Visitation will be at Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, August 16, 2018 and will continue one hour before the service at the church on Friday.

The first of nine siblings, Lester was born October 24, 1925 to Emmett Sr. and Hannah (Janssen) Nauman at their home in rural Floyd. He graduated from Floyd High School in 1943. While he helped his father with the family farms, he also acquired his own acres, all would be within four miles of his birthplace.

On October 6, 1946, he married Phyllis DeWalle in St. John Lutheran’s parsonage in Charles City. They would spend the next 62 years together raising four children and crops of corn, soybeans and dairy cows. He was also a seed corn salesman and active in Farm Bureau. Lester’s greatest joys in life were his family and watching them grow and raise their own children. Lester was an avid fisherman. His fondest memories were of fishing trips to Canada with his father, his family and special fishing buddies.

Early each July he would start harvesting night crawlers for the annual trek North with his pals; a lot of work, but he loved every minute of it. Lester was also a member of countless bowling teams and leagues, and horseshoe pitching groups after his retirement. A special love of metal detecting was shared with his sons Douglas and Derek and his good friend Harold Thompson; together they found treasures across Iowa and during winter trips south to Arizona.

Lester is survived by his daughter, Debra (Claude) Nash of Rockford; two sons: Douglas (Janice) Nauman of Nashua and Dennis (Carol) Nauman of Rudd; daughter-in-law, Eileen Nauman of Big Lake, Minnesota; seven grandchildren: Kelley Nauman of Nashua, Kyle (Terina) Nauman of McHenry, Illinois, Dawn (Jamie) Hinton of Elk River, Minnesota, Dustin (Lorena) Nash of Allentown, Pennsylvania, Amanda (Kyle) Critz of Altoona, Scott Nauman of Rudd and Brent Nauman of Rockford; seven great-grandchildren: Tyler Nauman, Madison and Tristan Hinton, Elias and Ruby Nash and Lucas and Lincoln Critz; four sisters: Bernice Caspers, Gladys Wandro, Alice (Vic) Klopping and Ardis Richardson; two sisters-in-law: Gloria (dec. Emmett, Jr.) Nauman and Janet (dec. David) Nauman; plus numerous nieces, nephews and their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Phyllis; son, Derek; sister, Vera; three brothers: David, Emmett Jr. and Paul; and many sisters- and brothers-in-law and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff at 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home and St. Croix Hospice for the wonderful, loving care they gave Lester.
