Mark Alan Shultz

November 1, 1958 - July 21, 2018

Mark Alan Shultz (59) was born November 1, 1958 and passed away at home on July 21, 2018, after battling glioblastoma brain cancer for seven months. He is survived by his two loving and caring sons Nathan Donald (17) and Dylan Francis (15) Shultz.

A memorial service will be held at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City on Saturday, August 4, 2018 at 10:00 am. Visitation with the family will be on Friday evening, August 3, 2018, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City and on Saturday one hour before the memorial services at church.

Mark grew up on a dairy farm in rural Charles City, Iowa. He loved to help his Dad with the daily chores growing up including milking the dairy cows twice a day. When Mark was 5 years old, he was diagnosed with a medulloblastoma, a malignant brain tumor that was successfully treated with radiation. He was the longest living survivor of cancer in Floyd County and participated in the local Relay for Life.

Mark graduated from Charles City High School in 1977, continued his studies at NIACC and the University of Wisconsin Platteville graduating with a bachelor's degree in Ag Business.

On August 22, 1998, he was united in marriage to Kristy Ludwig at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, near Elma. The family lived on Mark's childhood farm. He was a supportive father that wanted his boys to reach their full potential. Mark and Kristy had many friends and family that they loved to spend time with throughout their life together. Mark was employed at Zoetis for 22 years. He was a member of the Floyd Methodist Church and attended Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with his family. Mark loved to attend his boys' events ranging from 4-H meetings to bowling meets and watch superhero movies with his boys. In April, Mark took his boys on a vacation to Charlotte, North Carolina to visit family, where the boys rode on an airplane for the first time.

Mark is survived by his sons: Nathan (17) and Dylan (15) of Charles City; mother, Hattie (Chuck) Pyatt of Charles City; and his five siblings: Jane (Joe) Tucker of Charlotte, North Carolina, Sandy (Marlin) Eddy of Osceola, Dan (Laurie) Shultz of Omaha, Nebraska, James Shultz of Guthrie Center, and JoEllen (Bill) Bigelow of Des Moines; nephews and nieces: Jessica, Carly, Matthew, Susannah, Carolyn, Donald, Kelsey, Bobby, David, and Katie; mother-in-law, Marge Ludwig of Elma; and Kristy's family: Kathy (Dave) Hageman of Decorah, Kari (Tom) Dunn of Elma, and Kim (Phillip) Ollendieck of Cresco; and many nieces and nephews.

Mark was preceded in death by his wife, Kristy (Ludwig) Shultz on December 16, 2016; father, Morris Donald Shultz; father-in-law, Francis Ludwig; grandparents: Tom and Dorothy Smith, Clinton and Myrtle Shultz.

He has touched many lives and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials for his sons' education, Charles City Friends of Cancer, or the Rochester, Minnesota Hope Lodge.

Hauser Funeral Home, (641) 228-2323, in Charles City, is in charge of local arrangements. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.hauserfh.com .
