On October 4, 1980, Gary was united in marriage to Diane Hibner at Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City and this union was blessed with one daughter, Sarah. He loved having long conversations with her and being able to give her advice on life.

Gary was a member of the Cedar River H.O.G (Harley Owners Group) Chapter, Teamsters 238, Floyd County Pullers and played in a local pool league. He enjoyed riding his Candy Apple Red Harley Trike, having lunch with his friends at The Comet Bowl, riding his snowmobile, attending stock car races, golfing, fishing, camping and hunting. Gary also loved old country music and tractor pulls.
