James H. “Jim” Stiehl, passed away February 16, 2018, in Canon City, Colorado. He was 101.
Mr. Stiehl was born February 13, 1917, in Charles City, Iowa, to Albert A. and Stella (Merten) Stiehl. In 1944, he married Helen Lois James, who preceded him in death in 2014. He had two sons, Michael and John, both of Canon City and two granddaughters, Jennica of Denver and Joanna of Olympia, Washington.
Mr. Stiehl served in the Army during World War II as a 1st Lt. Mechanized Cavalry in the European Theatre. He loved the outdoors, especially the forests and mountains, studying Forestry at Iowa State University and graduating in 1939. He started his career in Oregon with the Edward Hines Lumber Company, later transferring to Chicago where he was sales manager until his retirement in 1979.
Jim and Helen retired to Canon City in 1980. They enjoyed a vacation home in the Guffey area since 1969. Jim also had a 57-acre tree farm where he spent many hours tending and planting trees.
He was a member of the Society of American Foresters, Shadow Hills Golf Club, Rolling Rockers bowling league, and an Elder of the United Presbyterian Church.
The family has decided that the best healing, growing and enrichment opportunities lie with a private, family memorial. For those who choose to honor the life of Jim, please make a donation on his behalf to the Historic Church Conservancy of Fremont County (HCC is a 501(c)(3) to help preserve the church building he so loved.
