John loved his Lutheran and German heritage. Church was very important to him as he dedicated his life to the ministry and his faith. He was a beloved minister in all his parishes and helped a lot of people over the years. His first parish was in Boyceville and Wheeler, Wisconsin. He would later serve in Stratford, Wisconsin, Readlyn, Joice and Rockford, Iowa, where he retired and moved to Mesa, Arizona in October of 2000.

Even though he was retired, he couldn't stay away from the church and became visitation pastor at Love of Christ Lutheran Church in Mesa, Arizona.

He and LaVonne loved to travel and took various trips around the United States. He also made several trips to Germany with his last one being this last October. We took several road trips as a family and it was always an adventure. We didn't have a lot of money but we have many fond memories.
