Olin James Maage was born May 5, 1921 in Polk County, Iowa, to Ole and Jennie (Alexander) Maage. He was raised on the family farm near Thor, Iowa where he later graduated from Thor High School. On September 17, 1941 Olin married Dorothy Dencklau at Saint John Lutheran Church in Vincent, Iowa. To this union two children, Jerry and Sandra, were born.
From May 22, 1943 to December 31, 1945 Olin served his country as a Marine Sergeant where he was a member of the Marine Night Fighter Squadron 542 in Okinawa. Perhaps the most notable of his jobs was as Superintendent for Collins Construction where he worked on the installation of satellite tracking stations. This job took Olin and Dorothy from Australia, to California, and to Madrid, Spain.
