NORA SPRINGS, IOWA - Alice Wendland, age 92 of Nora Springs, formerly of Fredericksburg, Iowa, passed away Thursday, March 23, 2017, at the Nora Springs Care Center.

Funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 27, 2017, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Fredericksburg with the Rev. Ronnie Koch presiding.

Interment will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery with Noah Wendland, Jacob Wendland, Isaac Wendland, Pat O'Hollearn, Matt O'Hollearn, Chris O'Hollearn, Kyle Wendland, Adam Mohling, Cory Mohling and Drew Wendland serving as pallbearers.

Friends may greet the family from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, March 26, 2017, at Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home in Fredericksburg. Visitation continues an hour prior to the service on Monday.

Alice was an overcomer. She met all of her life’s challenges with faith and her never give up spirit. She had a servant’s heart of love and shared that love with all she knew. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Alice Hermaine Wendland was born April 13, 1924, in rural Sumner, the daughter of William and Anna (Dietrich) Wenthe. Alice attended rural school in the Sumner area until attending Alpha High School where she graduated as class president in 1943. It was there that she met her future husband, Russell Wendland. The couple was married on Feb. 14, 1944, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Richfield, IA.

The couple farmed for several years in the Hawkeye and Alpha area before moving to the family farm north of Fredericksburg in 1950. To this union five children were born.

Alice was active in St. John’s Lutheran Church in Boyd, Iowa, and then St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Fredericksburg. She enjoyed the Lydia Circle at St. Paul’s, Chickasaw Farm Bureau Women, the Stop & Go Club, Fredericksburg Home Study Club, Fredericksburg Garden Club and playing cards with her friends and neighbors. She loved working on the farm, gardening and sewing for her many friends and family in Fredericksburg. Alice was a 4-H leader and the Wendland’s were 4-H family of the year in 1968. Russell and Alice enjoyed being the Grand Dairymen for Fredericksburg Dairy Days in 1996.

She lived her life well and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Memorial may be sent to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Fredericksburg or a charity of your choosing in Alice’s honor.

She is survived by her children, Lyle (Cindy) Wendland of Charles City, Iowa, Jane (Robert) O’Hollearn of Johnston, Iowa, Walter (Janet) Wendland of Mason City, Iowa, Annette (Brian) Mohling of Marion, Iowa, Dean (Dawn) Wendland of Floyd, IA; 13 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law Arlene Wenthe of Ossian, Iowa; one brother-in-law Don (Mary Beth) Wendland of Brandon, Mississippi.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Russell in 2008; four sisters Anna Bock, Hilda Pleggenkuhle Oelrich, Lucile Sustacha, Ruth Lange; three brothers William, Edward, infant brother Henry; brother-in law Robert (Mildred) Wendland sister-in-law Marilyn (Robert) Blanch.
