Norman “Norm” Sponheim, age 90, of Osage, Iowa, died Monday, February 20, 2017, at his home in Osage. Cremation has taken place.

Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, February 26, 2017, at Rock Creek Lutheran Church, 3269 Foothill Avenue, Osage, Iowa, with Pastor David A. Werges and Diaconal Minister Elayne J. Werges officiating. Inurnment will be at Rock Creek Cemetery. There will be a gathering of family and friends from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Saturday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.

In lieu of flowers, memorials will be sent to charities of the family’s choice.

Norman Edward Sponheim was born December 17, 1926, near Nora Springs, Iowa, the son of Ingvald and Alice (Klemesrud) Sponheim. He graduated from Osage High School in 1945, and attended Iowa State University in Ames. Norm served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. On October 23, 1949, he married Mildred Johnson at Rock Creek Lutheran Church. They farmed and raised their family in the area. Norm served on the Faith Lutheran Home Board and on various boards at Rock Creek Lutheran Church. He was also a 4-H leader. Norm enjoyed attending his children and grandchildren’s activities, reading, family get-togethers at the lake, and traveling.

Norm is survived by his wife, Mildred of Osage; his children, Joyce (Duane “Bogie”) Baun of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, Ann Bartlett of Rochester, Minnesota, Don (Karen) Sponheim of Altoona, Dean (Cindy) Sponheim of Nora Springs and Mary (Bob) Grey of Montevideo, Minnesota; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; sister, Margaret Melson of Longview, Texas, and her six children; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Eleanor Schallock, Marjorie Johnson, Betty Johnson, Harley (Clarissa) Johnson, Ike (Kathy) Johnson and Frances Johnson, all of Osage; Al McLaughlin of Belmond, Jackie Johnson of Des Moines, and Sharon (Jim) Boyce of Roseville, Minnesota; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ingvald and Alice Sponheim; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Clarence and Ruth Johnson; his son-in-law, David Bartlett; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Charles Melson, Florence (Alvy) Borcherding, LaVern Schallock, Dale Johnson, Margaret (Lowell) Olsen, Charles Johnson, Carol McLaughlin, Kenneth Johnson, and Keith Johnson.
