James Welch, a Pioneer Farmer
Of That Community, Passes Away

Floyd, Iowa, Sept. 9 – James Welch died at his home in Floyd, August 21, after an illness of thirty-six hours, of inflammation of the stomach.

He was born in Galaway, Ireland, October 20, 1820, and came to America in 1841 and settled in St. Albans, Vermont, in 1842. He married Margaret Sharkey in 1843 and moved to Worcester, Mass., where he lived until 1855. He came to Iowa during the winter of 1855-56, and settled on a farm four miles from Floyd, which then consisted of two houses and a post office. He lived on this farm until about eight years ago, when he moved to Floyd and lived quietly with his unmarried daughter Mary.

He was the father of seven children, W. H., of Chicago; James, of Charles city; John P., of Minneapolis; Katie and Lizzie, of Minneapolis; and Addie, of Boudle, S. Dakota, who just came home on a visit a week before his father’s illness.

The funeral was held at the Immaculate Conception Church at Charles City, at 10 a.m., the 23rd. Solemn requiem mass was celebrated by Rev. Father McGrath. The remains were followed to the silent city by a large cortege of people.
