Claude "Earl" Thompson, 88, of Charles City, formerly of Louisburg, Missouri, passed away Sunday, August 7, 2016 at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 12, 2016 at Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Reverend Robert Treichel will officiate. Burial will take place at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

Visitation will be held an hour prior to the service on Friday at Hauser Funeral Home.

Claude Earl Thompson was born in Durby, Iowa, on February 28, 1928, to Otis Leon and Blanche Etta (Carlton) Thompson. Earl attended early education in Sheridan, Iowa, and high school in Charles City. In 1940 Earl joined the Army where he served during World War II in Europe, France, Italy, Panama, and Korea (Peacetime). While in the military Earl also obtained two years of college credit.

Earl worked as a truck driver, as a manager at a gas station in California, also at Churchill Downs in Lexington, Kentucky, as well as managing an airport in Buffalo, Missouri, and finally after moving to Louisburg, Missouri, he worked as a speedway security guard. While in Missouri, Earl spent many years with his close friend Shirley Bass. After 20 years in Louisburg, Earl moved to Iowa to reconnect with his family.

Earl was a Lifetime member and past commander of the American Legion and a Lifetime member of the Hunting and Fishing Club. He was a loving man with a kind and generous heart. His inventive nature showed through his love of creating miniature wood sculptures and clever gadgets.

He enjoyed gardening and had a passion for fishing. He had a busy summer this year transporting his great niece Nadia for volleyball camp, Xander for band, and Bailey Renee for band lessons. Earl also loved to get out and see the Iowa countryside.

Living family members include his niece: Mrs. Anthony Brenda Schweiger of Charles City and her children and grandchildren; his siblings: Otis Lyle Thompson of Jefferson, David Thompson of Topeka, Kansas, and Rosemary Dawson of Texas; many other nieces, great nieces, and nephews; and two step-grandsons in Louisburg, Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings: Glen Thompson, Ray Thompson, Neal Thompson, Irene Miller, and Doris Wilson; and dear friend: Shirley Bass.
