Winnifred Alice (King) Salmons, the daughter of Clifford and Merle Abbie (Tracy) King was born May 10, 1913, in Hawthorne, Iowa (near Red Oak), in the apartment above the General Store her father owned. Soon afterward her father returned to farming, and Winnie spent most of her growing-up years on a farm in southwest Iowa. There she attended country schools, and graduated from Emerson High School in 1930. She then attended Red Oak Junior College, received her teaching certificate, and taught country school in Montgomery County from 1931 to 1940.

Winnie was united in marriage to Ivan Tyler Salmons Sept 29, 1940 in Red Oak, Iowa. In 1942, Ivan enlisted in the Navy during World War II, and Winnie returned to teaching in Scranton, Iowa. Ivan returned from war in 1945 and within a few years they began their family. In 1956, Winnie and Ivan came to Charles City with their two sons, Ivan (Ike) and Clifford.

From the time they moved to Charles City, Winnie was very active in the First Baptist Church and served the church in many ways. She was on the Board of Deacons, in American Baptist Women, a Circle Leader, on the General Board of American Baptist Churches in Northeast Iowa, and served a four year term as an elected representative to the National Board of American Baptists.

In the community, Winnie served in the Lincoln School PTA, as a Cub Scout Den Mother, as president of CCHS Band Parents, and president of the Starr Home Board. She was also an active member of Floyd County Church Women United, and Charles City Women's Club where she was named Woman of the Year in 2001.

Flower gardening was a passion for Winnie, and she could be found in her gardens all spring, summer and fall tending the flowers. She also loved playing piano and played at home, at church, weekly at the Salsbury Baptist Home, and accompanied her granddaughter, Jennifer, during Band Solo Contests at school. But her family was most important to her, and she was always willing to go somewhere or do something with them at a moment's notice.

Living family members include her two sons: Ivan (Jean Calligan) Salmons of Sioux City, and Clifford (Kathleen) Salmons of Charles City; two grandchildren: Jennifer (David Ash) Hanlon Ash of St Anthony, Minnesota, and Brent (Tracy) Salmons of Washington DC; four great-grandchildren: Hobbes and Iris Hanlon of St Anthony, Minnesota, and Chloe and Tyler Salmons of Washington, D.C.; a sister-in-law Marjorie King in Oregon and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ivan, in 1974, her parents, and two brothers, Kenneth and Max King.

Memorials may be sent to First Baptist Church, 105 Chapel Lane, Charles City, IA, 50616.
