CHARLES CITY, IOWA — Leo J. Thilges, 91, of Charles City, died Wednesday, April 20, 2016, at Mayo Clinic Hospital, Saint Marys Campus in Rochester, Minnesota.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, April 25, at Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Sister Diana Blong from Immaculate Conception Catholic Church will officiate.

Burial will be at Sunnyside Memory Gardens in rural Charles City.

Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the start of the funeral service at the funeral home on Monday.

Hauser Funeral Home, in Charles City, is in charge of local arrangements

Leo J. Thilges, 91, of Charles City, passed away Wednesday, April 20, 2016, at Mayo Clinic Hospital, Saint Marys Campus in Rochester, Minnesota.

A funeral service for Leo Thilges will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 25, 2016, at Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Sister Diana Blong from Immaculate Conception Catholic Church will officiate. Burial will be at Sunnyside Memory Gardens in rural Charles City.

Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the start of the funeral service at the funeral home on Monday.

Leo Joseph Thilges, the son of Joseph and Anna (Etringer) Thilges, was born February 15, 1925 in St. Joseph, Iowa. He attended country school in the area until his help was needed on the family farm and to take care of his mother. Leo was united in marriage to Wanda Mae Steele on June 3, 1947 at the Church of St. Joe in Kossuth County, Iowa. The couple made their home around St. Joseph until moving to the Charles City area in 1960 to begin farming their own land. Leo farmed and drove school bus for several years. In 1980, he retired from farming and they moved into Charles City, but Leo continued driving the school bus until 1984.

Leo was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. He loved to fish and enjoyed hunting and camping as well. Leo raised Chihuahuas for a number of years and was a handyman who could fix anything as long as he had a piece of wire and some duct tape.

Living family members include his four daughters: Linda Bond of Eagan, Minnesota, Gloria Ann (Doug) Gray of Ankeny, Lauree Jean Thilges of Clear Lake and Deb (Pete) Gallup of Charles City; ten grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; along with several nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Wanda; son, Leo Michael; and five brothers and sisters: Aloysius, Art, Ben, Florence and Viola.
