DEATH NOTICE--

NORA SPRINGS, IOWA — Burr Squier, 97, Nora Springs, died Sunday, April 10, 2016, at the Nora Springs Care Center.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Sheckler Colonial Chapel, Nora Springs.

OBITUARY--

NORA SPRINGS, IOWA - Burr Squier, 97, of Nora Springs, died Sunday, April 10, 2016, at the Nora Springs Care Center.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, April 14, 2016, at Holy Name Catholic Church, 507 First Ave. N.W., Rockford, with Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Rockford.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 13, 2016, at Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye, Nora Springs, with a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 6 p.m.

Burr Dewey Squier was born Feb. 18, 1919, in Rockford, Iowa, a son of George and Olga (Krueger) Squier. He graduated from Nora Springs High School in 1937 before enlisting in the United States Navy. While stationed in Australia he met Margaret (Greta) McWilliams, the two were married on July 1, 1944. To this union four children were born, Raymond, Robert, Dennis, and Mary Ann.

After serving for eight years he was honorably discharged from the Navy. Burr began farming near Nora Springs. He was a carpenter and also worked at the lumber yard in Rudd. He retired from farming in 1979, and started working as a rural mail carrier in Dougherty. Burr retired from the Post Office in 1989 with Dougherty celebrating “Burr Day” on his last day.

His wife Greta passed away on May 5, 1995. He married Marvelle (Noah) Ethington on November 1, 1997, in Rudd.

Burr enjoyed bowling, golfing, playing cards and spending time with his family and friends. He was a very social person, becoming friends with everyone he met.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Marvelle Squier, Nora Springs; children, Raymond (Sandra) Squier, Forest City, Robert (Cathy) Squier, Salt Lake City, UT, Dennis (Karen) Squier, Mason City, and Mary Ann (Marty) Lucas, Charles City; step-sons, Tom (Kris) Ethington, Mason City, and Brad (Jill) Ethington, Rudd; step-daughter-in-law, Nancy Ethington, Carroll; 27 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; siblings, Bonnie Bitzan, Phyllis Brundell, Sandy Schulte, Gary Squier, and Duane Squier; sisters-in-law, Betty Squier and Beverly Christensen; as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Burr was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; Greta Squier; brothers: Roger, Truman and Wendell; sisters: Shirley, Irene, Inez, Marlene, Donna Jean, and Delores; step-son, Greg Ethington; grandson, Christopher Squier; daughter-in-law, Linda Squier.
