He was raised on the farm and attended St. Mary's Catholic School in Roseville. He continued to help on the family farm until he was drafted into the United States Army in 1942. Bernard proudly served his country in Europe during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1945. He returned home and continued farming with his family.
Bernard was united in marriage to Lillian Grimm on January 12, 1948 at St. Cecelia's Catholic Church in rural Howard County, Iowa. The couple made their home near Alta Vista where they farmed and began raising their family. They would later move near Roseville continuing to raise their family and farm. Bernard never retired from his love of farming, helping his two sons until very recently.
Bernard was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Roseville. He was also a member of the V.F.W. in Charles City and the American Legion in Marble Rock. Bernard enjoyed fishing, playing cards (especially Euchre), going to dances, having his children and nephews over for coffee on Sunday mornings and camping (at least enough to cook out and then go home, never to stay the night). He loved spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Living family members include his 13 children: Linda Schmitt, Virgil Schmitt, Albert Schmitt all of Charles City, Judy (Dennis) Kapping of Nashua, Susan Schmitt, Diana (Garland) Thompson, Karen (Ed) Olsen, Francis (Betsy) Schmitt, Connie Schmitt, Nancy (Art) Lines, Thomas (Simone) Schmitt all of Charles City, Teresa (Richard) Drilling of New Hampton and Dale (Allison) Schmitt of Charles City; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sister, Stella Fuller of Bettendorf; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
