Darwin Shreve - Marble Rock
A Celebration of Life Service for Darwin Shreve, 79, of Marble Rock, will be 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 8, 2015, at Retz Funeral Home, 519 N. First St. Greene, with Chaplain Janet Dorenkamp officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Darwin Beryl Shreve was born on April 9, 1936, in Bristow, Butler County, Iowa, the son of William Niles and Minnie Jeanette (Henning) Shreve and died on Thursday, December 3, 2015, at the Valley View Care Center in Greene. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Marble Rock.
He received his education in country school and attended Dumont High School. Early in life Darwin was employed by Pooley Lumber Company in Greene and also worked for Allied Construction.
Darwin served in the United States Navy as a Fireman Apprentice on the USS Cavallaro. He was honorably discharged in 1959.
Darwin was united in marriage to JoAnn Heyenga on June 6, 1961. This union was blessed with 4 children.
After his discharge Darwin worked for several service stations in Greene, for Rottler Farms for six years and farmed for Donovan Marsh for over 20 years. He opened and operated D&D Salvage in rural Greene until 2000.
He was a very private man. He loved getting together with his family and spending time teasing his grandchildren. Darwin loved to fish, hunt, camp and spent countless hours with his wife fishing in South Dakota and Minnesota. He enjoyed fishing during the week when there were no other around. Darwin liked the quiet and the solitude of being out on the water.
Living family members include his wife of 54 years, JoAnn Shreve, Marble Rock; four children: Darwin D. Shreve, North Pole, Ak; Danny (Denise) Shreve, Greene; Debbie (Ricardo) Wells, Charles City; David (Suzy) Shreve, West Union; eleven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Darwin is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Rev. Robert Shreve; Brother-in-law, Delvin Arjes; nephew, Rodney Shreve; niece, Barbara Shreve.
