CHARLES CITY, IOWA - Richard D. Buttjer, 88, of Charles City, passed away Thursday, November 26, 2015, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

A funeral service for Richard D. Buttjer will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 30, 2015, at Cross Lutheran Church in Charles City. Pastor Dan Larson will officiate. Burial will be at Sunnyside Memory Gardens in rural Charles City.

Visitation will be held at Hauser Funeral Home from 3-5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 29, 2015, and will continue one hour prior to the service Monday at the church.

Richard D. Buttjer, 88, of Charles City, passed away Thursday, November 26, 2015 in Charles City.

A funeral service for Richard D. Buttjer will be held Monday, November 30, 2015 at Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. Pastor Dan Larson will officiate. Burial will be at Sunnyside Memory Gardens in rural Charles City.

Visitation will be held at Hauser Funeral Home Sunday, November 29, 2015 as well as one hour prior to the service Monday at the church.

Richard Dwayne Buttjer, the son of Thole and Helene (Engel) Buttjer, was born November 27, 1926 in Clarksville, Iowa. He attended the Iowa State School for the Deaf in Council Bluffs for many years and returned home to help his father farm.

Richard was united in marriage to Shirley Schroeder on May 5, 1951 in Mason City. The couple made their home on the family farm south of Charles City. Richard farmed, worked at Richard's Implement, White Farm for a few years, and Granny's Kitchen where he retired in 1995. He loved working on tractors, especially Allis-Chalmers, and his children would listen while he tuned the engine. Richard was a member of Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church. He enjoyed traveling, going for rides, and he loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Living family members include his wife of 64 years, Shirley, of Charles City; children: David (Marilyn) Buttjer of Charles City, Robert Buttjer of Rudd, Michael (Sherry) Buttjer of Plainfield, Christine Buttjer of Owatonna, Minnesota, Dennis (Connie) Buttjer of Charles City, and Kathleen (Kim) Abbott of Bentonville, Arkansas; 14 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; sister, Heleyne Adelmund of Charles City; along with many nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Jimmy Ross; and three sisters: Luverne Buttjer, LaVonne Ritter and Margaret Wetherell.
