Frances Inez (Masterson) Trettin was born on July 1, 1924 in Badger, Iowa, to Robert Roy and Lillian Golden (Becker) Masterson. She was the youngest of nine children. Frances spent her early childhood in Livermore, Iowa, before moving to Lu Verne, Iowa, where she attended grade school. Her family later relocated to Corwith, Iowa, where Frances enjoyed farm life and attended Corwith Schools. She graduated in 1941 at the age of 16.

After graduation Frances moved to Mason City, Iowa, and took her first job as a bookkeeper for General Mills Feed Store, a feed company serving North Iowa farmers. It was there she was introduced to Harold Trettin of Rockford. It was love at first sight. The couple married on July 16, 1944 at Zion Lutheran Church. Frances was a person of great faith and became a life-long member of the church.

Together Frances and Harold established their home in Rockford. Frances was a secretary and bookkeeper for Trettin Turkey Farm, then Trettin Hatchery and Poultry Farm and later H.E. Trettin, Inc. She remained active in the business well into her eighties. Frances was proud to have upgraded her skills to computerized bookkeeping in her later years.

As well as business partners, Frances and Harold raised a family together. She always said it was the “best job she ever had.” Son, Ken, was first born to the couple followed by three daughters: Jean, Bea, and Louise. Frances took much pride in her family and the duties of motherhood in Mid-Century Midwest America. She was a cook, seamstress, den mother, chauffeur, and countless other duties while her children were growing up. She later continued these duties for her 14 grandchildren.

Frances and Harold enjoyed traveling. During the hatchery years, trade conventions took the family on multiple road trips across the country. In later years, Frances and Harold enjoyed touring in their Winnebago, especially to Alaska. They maintained a vacation home in Walker, Minnesota, for over 25 years. It was a site of countless fishing vacations with family and friends.

Those left to cherish her memory include her four children and their spouses: Kenneth (Eileen) Trettin of Rockford, Jean (John) Pearson of Rockford, Bea (Mark) Volk of Mason City, and Louise (Todd) Seibert of Rockford; 14 grandchildren: Heather (Shawn) FitzGerald, Anthony (Jenny) Trettin, Christopher Trettin, Reed (Tracy) Trettin, Aaron (Elizabeth) Pearson, Paul Pearson and fiancé Stephanie Brocka, Alex Pearson Michelle Volk, Stephanie (Augie) Nguyen, Brittany Volk and fiancé Colby Martin, Emily (Terry) Fett, Anna Seibert and fiancé Chris Loebach, Jacob (Paige) Seibert, and Michael Seibert and fiancé Alexandra DeWitt; 11 great-grandchildren: Claire and Brianne FitzGerald, Harley Trettin, William, Wyatt, and Alania Trettin, Abigail Pearson, Joshua, Matthew, and Emma Pearson, and Lillian Frances Fett; sister, Margaret Trettin; sister-in-law, Shirley Fullerton; brother-in-law, George Trettin; and many nieces, nephews, and other extended family.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 68 years, Harold Trettin in 2012; parents; brother, Floyd Masterson; sisters, Anna Godfrey, Dorothy Hibbard, Louise Bastian Abbas, Cora Mae Evans, Roberta Trees, Betty Williams, and numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
