Jerome Raymond Schmitt was born January 10, 1939, in rural Charles City, the son of Mathias and Vera (Einck) Schmitt. He was the second oldest of 10 children. He graduated from Marble Rock High School in 1957. On May 14, 1960, Jerome was married to Shari (Sharon DeBower) at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. At the beginning of their marriage Jerome farmed a couple of years by Marble Rock, worked at White Farm Equipment for 34 ½ years until they closed their doors and then went to college at NICC in Calmar for Plumbing and Heating. He then worked as a plumber for Mills-Helmers until his retirement. He also was a carpenter and painter for many years.

Jerome loved to hunt and fish. He and Shari spent many years camping. He loved sharing the camper with his family, especially taking his grandsons camping and gathering with friends going different places to camp, but his favorite spot was Decorah. Jerome and Shari spent a lot of fun times with numerous card groups, domino groups and special coffee friends at Hy-Vee.

Jerome was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. During his camping years, he and Shari adopted St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah as their second church. Much time was spent in Decorah with many Decorah camping friends.

Living family members include his wife, Shari, married 54 years; his three daughters: Karla Goddard of Charles City, Sondra Schmitt of Waterloo and Paula (Shawn) Vroman of Waterloo; two grandsons: Carl and Brian Goddard; four sisters: Margaret (Larry) Trenary of Blue Earth, Minnesota, Liz Schmitt (Larry Wagner) of Rockford, Ellen (Denis) Flaherty of Albert Lea, Minnesota and Barb Schmitt of Chicago, Illinois; five brothers: Don (Mary) Schmitt of Grinnell, Art Schmitt of Rudd, Walt (Paula) Schmitt of Marble Rock, Clarence (Christine) Schmitt of Marble Rock and Norman (Brenda) Schmitt of Rudd; mother-in-law, Alice Funte of Charles City; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Roy and Gloria DeBower of Marshalltown; along with many nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
