CHARLES CITY, IOWA - Vernon William "Van" Vanderlan, 86, of Charles City, died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2006, at the Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Home, Charles City.

He was born March 31, 1920, in Parkersburg, son of William and Jennie Cordes Vanderlan. On September 23, 1946, he married Marilyn Hambly in Colorado.

Mr. Vanderlan graduated from Finchford High School, then served in the U.S. Army. He was employed for 52 years as a car salesman, working at Charles City Motor from 1954 to 1970, Duroe's Inc. from 1970 to 1981 and at Mike Molstead Motors from 1995 to the present. He was president of the congregation at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife; a grandson; and three brothers, Dale of Charles City, Richard (Barbara) of Charleston, S.C., and Donald of Santa Cruz, Calif.

Preceded in death by a daughter, Rebecca Jo Vanderlan.

Services: 10 a.m. Thursday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, with burial in Riverside Cemetery, both in Charles City. Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hauser Funeral Home, Charles City, and for an hour before services Thursday at the church.
