MARBLE ROCK, IOWA - Funeral services for Eugene T. Ewald, 88, of Marble Rock, will be 1 p.m., Monday, December 15, 2014, at the United Methodist Church in Marble Rock with Pastor Judy Wooton officiating. Burial will be in the Westside Cemetery, Marble Rock, with Military Honors conducted by Stroud-Gates Post 387 American Legion of Greene.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Sunday, December 14, 2014, at Retz Funeral Home, 519 N. First St., Greene, followed by a Masonic Service at 7 p.m.

Eugene was born May 4, 1926, in Marble Rock, Floyd County, Iowa, to Edgar and Ruth (Thomas) Ewald, and died Friday, December 12, 2014, at the Liebe Care Center in Greene.

He received his education in public school, graduating from Marble Rock High School in 1944.

He was inducted into the United States Army where he served in Europe during World War II. Having been honorably discharged he returned to Rockford to live and farm on the Pribbenow farm and later moved to the family Century Farm.

He was united in marriage to Norma Hinrichsen on October 3, 1948, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. This union was blessed with five children.

Eugene was very interested in all aspects of farming with livestock and grain. He was active with the Iowa Pork Producers, the Masons, and the American Legion of Marble Rock. He liked to play cards, to go camping and spent 25 years traveling and wintering in Texas. He was very proud of his country and instrumental in establishing the current Veterans Monument in Marble Rock. Eugene was particularly proud to have taken part in an Honor Flight for WWII Veterans that flew in 2009.

He was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church in Marble Rock. He taught his children valuable life skills, and encouraged a strong work ethic reminding his children to “do things right the first time.” Eugene was extremely devoted to his family.

Living family members include his wife of 66 years, Norma; his children: Vicki (Mike) Majewski, Greene, Patty (Larry) Schulte, Carmel, IN, Julie Ritter, Lake Mills, Sherri Yerkey, Cave Creek, AZ, Gary (Chris) Ewald, Evansdale; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one sister, Doris Evans, Solon; one brother, Mike (Maxine) Ewald, Rockford; and many friends.

Eugene was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Elaine (Terry) Zilm; grandchild, Nicolas Ewald; great-grandchild, Elsie Ritter; son-in-law, Jim Ritter.
