Mary Ellen Scheidecker Whiteside was born July 29, 1947, at Waverly, Iowa, the first of six children to William and Eva (Smiley) Scheidecker. During her early years the family lived northwest of Plainfield, then moved southwest of Greene and in 1955 east of Greene. She graduated from Plainfield High School in 1965 and then from Professional Business Institute in Minneapolis, Minn. as a dental assistant. Mary worked a year for an orthodontist in Minneapolis, moving to Charles City where she worked for Dr. Gary Wright until 1972.

On June 10, 1972, she was united in marriage to Allan Whiteside. They moved to Fayetteville, N.C. until Al's discharge from the United States Air Force in December of 1972. They then moved to Roseville, Minnesota, where Al attended Northwestern College, now Northwestern University. During the next five years, while Allan was a student, they were dorm parents for 84 girls a year. Mary also worked in the college library and cared for numerous flower gardens on campus. After Al's graduation, they lived in Cedar Rapids, Brainerd, Plainfield and Nashua. During those years, Mary would start a cake decorating and sewing business as well as carve gold crowns for the local dentist.

In 1983 after Al's graduation from mortuary college, they began their work with Becker Miles Funeral Home in Sumner and Fayette. They moved to Charles City in 1989 when a position opened at Hauser Funeral Home. Those first years she volunteered with Heart to Home Hospice, Red Cross, and as a "Pink Lady" at the Floyd County Hospital. She also worked in the Charles City school system for a time. Mary began working at the Charles City Public Library in 1992, a career that would continue until her retirement in September of 2014.

She will be remembered for her smile and willingness to help anyone. Mary was a woman of many talents who enjoyed fishing, vegetable and flower gardening, canning, cake decorating, sewing, crafts of various types and reading.

Caring for her husband, two children, five grandchildren, and extended family was always very important to Mary. She will be remembered for her great smile and deep faith in Jesus Christ that lead her through all her life and became so evident during her cancer journey.

Living family members include her husband, Allan Whiteside of Charles City; two children, Beth (Jeremy) Helsel of Claysburg, Pennsylvania, and Ryan (Megan) Whiteside of Dixon, Illinois; five grandchildren, Kaden, Brady and Landon Helsel and Grace and Connor Whiteside; five siblings, Dorothy Kasper of Brookville, Pennsylvania; Bill (Martha) Scheidecker of Hampton, Bob (Polly) Scheidecker of Clarksville, Jim (Jen) Scheidecker of Ramsey, Minnesota, Celia (Brian) Prigge of St. Cloud, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and brother-in-law, David Kasper.
