Larry was born June 18, 1945, in Pierson, Iowa, the son of Charlton and Sylvia (Dragoo) Richards. He grew up on a farm and loved raising livestock. He graduated from Kingsley/Pierson High School and Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, with a double degree in Business Administration and Livestock Marketing. On Aug. 12, 1967, he was united in marriage to Karen Lange. To this union, their two sons, David and Greg, were born.

Larry began his working career, while attending college, by auctioning with A.P. Itso in Sioux City, Iowa, and working at the Sioux City Stockyards. After graduation, he began selling insurance. In 1967, he enlisted in the Army and served for three years while being stationed in Fort Knox, Kentucky. Upon discharge, he began his career in Trust Departments working at Citizens Bank in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, Security National Bank in Sioux City, Iowa, and First Security Bank and Trust Company in Charles City, Iowa.

He was selected to be one of 23 students to travel to Africa and parts of Europe to study the government, education and economic situations of Africa. He also became a certified Dale Carnegie Instructor and a Kentucky Colonel.

Throughout his banking career Larry served on many church, civic committees and boards to include the following Charles City organizations: Charles City Community School District, Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce, Floyd County Cattlemen's Association, St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church and Floyd County Medical Center.
