Obituary for Robert E. Popes

Robert "Bob" E. Popes, age 82, of Plainfield, Iowa, died Saturday morning, August 3, 2013, at the Clarksville Skilled Nursing and Rehab in Clarksville.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 7, 2013, at the First United Church of Christ-Pleasant Valley, rural Clarksville, with Pastor Linda Myren officiating.

Interment will be in Willow Lawn Cemetery, Plainfield, with full military honors by the Nashua VFW Post.

Friends may greet the family 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 6, 2013, at the Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home in Nashua. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.

Robert “Bob” Edward Popes was born March 17, 1931, in Charles City, Iowa, the son of George and Magdalen (Osier) Popes. He received his education in rural country schools near Charles City.

He served his country in the United States Air Force and while stationed in England, he met and married Grace McGill. To this union a daughter, Margaret Ann was born. The couple later divorced. In 1958, he met Marlys Koch of Tripoli and the couple was united in marriage on August 29, 1959, at the Faith United Church of Christ in Tripoli. The couple had three children, Sande, Mark and Dean. Bob and Marlys initially farmed in Chickasaw county near Fredericksburg and then farmed the last 42 years at their home place northwest of Plainfield where he also enjoyed milking the dairy cows. Farming was not just a job or a lifestyle to Bob, it was also his hobby. He also enjoyed making the early morning coffee at the Plainfield City Hall and playing cards with his friends. He loved to play games with his grandchildren and go to all their school activities.

Survivors include his wife, Marlys; one daughter, Sande (Allan) Fehring of Shell Rock, Iowa; two sons, Mark Popes of Plainfield, Dean Popes of Clarksville; son-in-law, Ron (Brenda) Gagne of Haysville, KS; ten grandchildren, Jessie, Randi, Terry, Tiffany, Alyson, Corey, Kilie, Robert, James and Phillip; several great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Margaret Ann Gagne; two brothers, John Popes, Raymond Popes; one sister, Shirley Logan; three nephews, Randy Logan, Rick Logan and Dale Popes.
