CHARLES CITY, IOWA -- Gladys “Glady” Siems, 86, of Charles City, died Friday, May 16, 2014, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Funeral services for Glady Siems will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 19, 2014, at Trinity United Methodist Church. Pastor Jim Beranek will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home Sunday, May 18, 2014, from 4 to 6 p.m. and one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.

Glady came into this world on November 18, 1927, born to Lloyd and Ethel (Long) Ames in Burchinal, Iowa. She lived on the family farm in Swaledale most of her life. She attended Swaledale High School where she played basketball and was a member of the basketball team that succeeded to the state tournaments in Des Moines. Glady was also the majorette for the Swaledale High School Marching Band.

Glady married Dale M. Siems on April 6, 1947, in Mason City where they made their first home. Glady worked as a clerk in a donut shop, as a cashier at Baron’s Women’s Clothing, and as a bookkeeper in Mason City. Her two daughters, Linda and Judy, were born in Mason City, and the family moved to Charles City in 1955.

Glady and Dale’s two sons, Barry and Tom, were born shortly after they moved to Charles City. In addition to being a full-time homemaker for a short while, Glady rejoined the workforce at the local Credit Bureau alongside Robert Gilliland and subsequently at United Way’s Teen Tavern alongside Mrs. Vern Wessel for more than 14 years. Glady enjoyed working with the youth in her community.

Glady was also very active in her community. She was a member of the Charles City Improvement Board, Board Chairperson and member of Charles City Country Club. Glady was also a long time member of the Country Club’s Ladies’ Bridge Club which was her most enjoyable pastime where she met and made many friends over the years. Glady and her special friend, Jeannette, also liked going to Las Vegas. She was active in her church, Trinity United Methodist Church, serving as chairperson for various Circles. She was actively involved in Rainbow Girls, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, PTA, band activities, and various school carnivals. Last, but not least, Glady was an avid fan of both the Iowa Hawkeyes and Green Bay Packers and also loved gardening and canning.

Living family members include her children: Linda (Don) Lindall of Red Lodge, Montana, Judy Siems of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Barry (Leesa) Siems of Bolivar, Missouri, Tom Siems of Malmo, Minnesota and Amy Siems of Blaine, Minnesota; four grandchildren: Matthew (Shyla) Siems, Brandi Siems, Amber (Darrin) Tranberg and Danielle (Kort) Johnson; eight great-grandchildren: Austin, Mackenzie, Zoey, Breanne, Addison, Braidyn, Ellivia and Emmalee; siblings: Dale Ames, Roger (Leona) Ames, Bill (Virginia) Ames, Jerry (Barb) Ames and Barb Havill; former spouse Dale Siems of Isle, Minnesota; special friend Roxanne Wilder of St. Paul, Minnesota; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers: Bob and Francis; sister Charlotte; numerous aunts and uncles; and special friends Alton Wilder, Jeannette Schilling, Camilla Strobel, Hunky Peters and Phyllis Kelly.

The family would like to express deep gratitude to all of the caregivers who helped Glady and them through this very difficult time.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of North Iowa and/or The American Cancer Society.
