LaVarr Marion Schmidt Rhomberg

LaVarr Marion Schmidt Rhomberg, 77, of Elkader was born into eternity Thursday, May 8, 2014, at the Floyd County Medical Center, Charles City.

Visitation was held May 11 from 4-7 p.m. at the Leonard Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Elkader and will be held again one hour before Mass time at the church on Monday.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, May 12, at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Elkader. The Very Rev. Paul R. Peters will be the celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Elkader.

She was born into life on May 14, 1936, to Bernard and Shirley (Olsen) Kraft in Burlington, Iowa. LaVarr graduated from Burlington High School in 1954.

LaVarr was united in marriage with John Schmidt on October 12, 1957, at St. John the Baptist Church in Burlington, Iowa. Three children were born to this union. John passed away in 1994. LaVarr was then united in marriage with Joseph Rhomberg on December 26, 1996, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elkader and he passed away in 2013.

LaVarr was the former Clerk of Court for Clayton County and she also volunteered at the food pantry in Charles City.

She loved to sing and she sang in the church choir in Elkader and Charles City. Her faith was very important to her. She also enjoyed bowling, playing cards and attending her grandkids sporting events. LaVarr loved going for walks with her grand-dogs, Buster and Teddy.

LaVarr is survived by her children, J.T. (Nancy) Schmidt of Dubuque, SuAnne (Bret) Kloberdanz of Charles City and Eric (Kelly) Schmidt of Charles City; nine grandchildren, Kyle, Kevin, Kurt, Kari (Kevin), Pete (Anila), Adam, Jordan (Ashley), Justin (Brianna) and Brandon; one great-grandchild, Rowyn; eight stepchildren, Joe Rhomberg, Jeannie Hupp, Mary Lawler, Patti Simpson, Monica Keleher, Kathleen Laurin, Susan Gooding and John Rhomberg and a sister, Alice (Ed) Duroe of Charles City.

LaVarr was preceded in death by her two husbands; her parents and two brothers, Duane and Jack Kraft.

Leonard Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Elkader, is in charge of arrangements.
