Obituary

Ann Marie Sorenson, age 80 of Austin, Minnesota, died Wednesday, April 30, 2014, at St. Marks Lutheran Home. Ann Marie Mehmen was born August 8, 1933, in Charles City, Iowa to Mehme Harms Mehmen and Zwantje Afkea Wiebrand. She grew up in Rockford, Iowa and graduated from high school in Rockford in 1952.

On July 3, 1954, Ann married James Sorenson in Austin, Minnesota. James passed away on January 1, 1972. She was employed by Donald and Kermit Watts as a cook, retiring in 1994. Ann and James raised four children. For many years, Ann was a volunteer cook at the Austin Eagles Club. She loved to cook, she enjoyed the outdoors, and was an avid Minnesota Twins fan. Most important to her was spending time with her grandchildren and family.

Survivors include her children: Steve (Brenda) Sorenson and Harold (Cathy) Sorenson, both of Austin, Barb (Jerry) Gunderson of Brownsdale, and Susan (Lee) Smock, also of Austin; six grandchildren: Bradley (Lindsay) Sorenson, Jim (Beth) Sorenson, Mandi (Brian) Ollendieck, Joe (Mariah) Gunderson, Michelle Sorenson, Lee (Sarah) Gunderson; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband James, two grandchildren in infancy, and her brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, 2014 at the Worlein Funeral Home Chapel in Austin, with Todd Portinga, Associate in Ministry, officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 9 at Worlein Funeral Home. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Memorials can be directed to Alzheimer’s Research or to recipient of donor's choice. Services prearranged and performed by Worlein Funeral Home of Austin.
