Robert W. Hoover, Sr

Robert W. Hoover, Sr., 96, of Sunset Park Place, 3730 Pennsylvania Ave., Dubuque and formerly of Rudd and Sherrill passed away Tuesday, February 7, 2006 at his home of natural causes.

A Celebration of Life will be held February 20, at Rudd United Methodist Church, Rudd, at 11 a.m.. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Rudd.

Robert was born December 31, 1909, the son of Arthur and Minnie Belle (Scofield) Hoover. He graduated from Wheaton College. As a young man, he worked for his father’s dry goods and women’s ready to wear store in West Union, Iowa. He later opened a men’s clothing store in West Union.

Robert married Helen Esther Silver on June 11, 1935, in Waterloo. She died on August 12, 1990. He later married Alpha Datisman on January 1, 1993, at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Dubuque. She died in 2005.

Around 1943, Bob bought a chicken hatchery in West Union. In the summer of 1945 he sold the hatchery in West Union and opened Hoover’s Hatchery in Rudd. He owned and operated the hatchery until he began selling the business to some of his employees in 1978. He sold the property in 2005.

Living family members include three sons: Bob (Jo) Hoover, of Solon, Jeff (Ellen) Hoover, of Lubumbashi, Congo (DRC) and Dave A. (Suzan) Hoover, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; three step-daughters: Beverly (Ken) Kruempel, of Ames, Susan (Dave) Albrecht, of Sherrill, and Janet (Craig) Kacskos, of Lancaster, Pa.; two step-sons: Richard (Judy) Datisman, of Sherrill, and Roger (Bev) Datisman, of Bettendorf; a sister-in-law, Joyce Hoover, Dubuque; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; 11 step-grandchildren; and 14 step-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Esther (Silver) Hoover, on August 18, 1990, and his second wife, Alpha (Datisman) Hoover, on July 22, 2005; as well as sons Edward Silver Hoover and John Arthur Hoover in infancy; and two brothers, Charles Hoover and Horace “Herb” Hoover.

A Robert W. Hoover, Sr. Memorial Fund has been established.
