Collins, Maria M. (Brackett)

Collins - Died, April 8th, 1895, at her home in Frederick, Brown County, S. Da., of typhoid pneumonia, Mrs. M. M. Collins, wife of Judge A. L. Collins.

Maria M. Brackett, youngest daughter of Jerry and Uranah Brackett, was born in Caledonia County, VT., December 13, 1827. At a very early age her mother was taken away leaving her to the tender care of her father, who watched over her till she arrived at womanhood, when she went to Watertown, Wis., and made her home for a number of years with her only sister, Mrs. L. A. Cole.

In the spring of 1855 she made a visit to Rockford, Illinois, remaining there six months, from which city she came to Charles City in November of the same year.

On September 12, 1856, she was united in marriage to Judge A. L. Collins, and lived in their first house, the first built in Charles City, for nearly thirty years, and in which all their children, four sons and two daughters, were born. In 1883 they went to Frederick, S. Dak., where they made their home until her death, excepting one season spent at Faulkton. The husband and children survive her. The children at Bert L., George E., Charles D., Dick F., Nana B. and Gertrude, the latter now Mrs. L. C. Proctor, of Stillwater, Minn. Four of the children were present at the funeral, which occurred at the home of her cousin, A. H. Brackett, in this city, April 10, 1895. Rev. T. M. Evans officiating.
