Winterink, Henry

Died, at 8:30 p.m., at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. John Wiltse, in St. Charles Township, November 18, 1908, Henry Winterink, aged 88 years, 2 months and 27 days.

The deceased was born in Amsterdam, Holland, July 21, 1920. He was married to Delia Firhouga of same county and city in 1845. To this union there were born nine children, six of whom are now living, three sons, Chester, M. G. and G. W. Winterink, residents of this place, and three daughters, Amelia McFarland, of Baraboo, Wisc.; Jennie Bunker, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Elsie, widow of John Wiltse, of this city.

Henry Winterink came to America in 1848. He settled on land which is now part of Chicago. He went from there to Belvidere, Ill., and from there came to Charles City in September 1854. He settled on 160 acres of land east of the S. M. Clark farm on the Nashua Road. When E. C. Coaman purchased that farm he also purchased the Winterink farm. Winterink then purchased a far farther up the river opposite the stone school house. Lived there some twelve years. He then moved onto 208 which he owned on the opposite side of the river and which he owned at his death. He resided on this farm some ten years when he moved to the city, where he lived until nineteen years ago when his wife died in this city.

Since that time Mr. Winterink has made his home with his children, at times one and then the other. Of late years he has been troubled with kidney difficulty.

He has been around each day until some ten days since when he was taken to his room and never left it. For years he was a member of the Christian Church of this city. For the past twelve years he has been a member of the Wesleyan Methodist Church.

We have known Henry Winterink long years and knew him as a quiet, peaceful, contented citizen, a first class man, dealing honestly and honorably with all men. He was one of the sturdy farmers of pioneer antecedents who helped make Floyd County blossom as the rose.

After a long and well spent life he is at rest. Peace to his ashes.

The funeral services will be held at the residence of Mrs. John Wiltse tomorrow at 1:30, Rev. Dodd officiating.
