Charles City, Iowa — Gladys Joan Deetz, 77, of Charles City, died Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013, at Floyd County Memorial Hospital, Charles City.

A graveside service and inurnment will be on Friday, September 6, at 11 a.m. in Calvary Cemetery in Charles City. Sister Diana Blong of Immaculate Conception Church will officiate.

Gladys Joan Deetz, 77, of Charles City died at Floyd County Memorial Hospital.

A graveside service and inurnment will be held on Friday Sept. 6, 2013, at 11 a.m. in Calvary Cemetery in Charles City. Sister Diana Blong from Immaculate Conception Church will officiate at the burial. Memorials can be made to the family of Gladys.

Gladys was born in Howard County, Iowa on March 22, 1936, to Edwin and Agnes (Marik) Thompson.

On July 17, 1956, she was united in marriage to Vern Deetz. Unto this marriage seven children where born.

Gladys loved music and everything about it, she wrote many songs, she could play a few instruments, like violin, mandolin, accordion, but the guitar was what she was really good at. She played in a band by the name of Diamond T Cowboys for years. She was very proud of the fact that she was in the Foster Grandparent program, and these children were very lucky to have her. They were just as important to her as her own children. Gladys was involved in the St. Catherine’s Circle at Immaculate Conception Church.

She enjoyed volunteering at the Treasure Chest in Charles City. Gladys also enjoyed playing cards and doing crossword puzzles. Gladys wrote poems that will be remembered by those closest to her. The one thing you could say about Gladys is she would not take no for an answer, also this was a woman who was loved by everyone who knew her. And the one thing Gladys would say to you is “you just have to play the hand you are dealt.”

Gladys is survived by her seven children, Steven (Judy) Deetz of Charles City, David (Kay) Deetz of Forest City, Shelia (Don) Novak of Spirit Lake, Lori (Mark) Johnson of Charles City, Brian (Kathy) Deetz of Charles City, Kevin Deetz of Floyd, and Sharla Sylvester of Mason City. Her sisters Geraldine Johnson of New Hampton, Genevieve Swietzer of New Hampton, and Grace (Arnold) Deetz of Charles City. Gladys has a brother, Garland (Diane) Thompson of Charles City. Also left to cherish her memory are her many loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Gladys will be greatly missed by all those who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her parents Edwin and Agnes, her husband Vern, a granddaughter Samantha Rose, and brothers, Raymond and Jimmy Thompson.
