Clair John North was born March 25, 1933, the son of Glen S. and Neta (Sisson) North. He received his education in Charles City, graduating from Charles City High School in 1951. Clair married his high school sweetheart, Noriene Matthews, on December 29, 1951. The couple made their home in Charles City where they raised their family. He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church.

Clair began working for Northwestern Bell immediately after high school and retired from the company after 43 years. Two of those years Clair enlisted in the 101st Army Airborne Battalion which was stationed in Puerto Rico during the Korean War, 1951-1953. Clair was an avid sportsman who enjoyed coon and game bird hunting.

Coon hunting was his favorite sport and he could name all of his coon and bird dogs by name, but his favorite friend and companion was his house dog, Dixie. Clair also enjoyed weekends showing horses with his children, and he spent countless hours donating his time with the Isaac Walton League including 25 years teaching hunter gun safety courses. Clair loved fishing with this family and all of his friends from the West Wind Trailer Park at Lake City, Minnesota, during the summers.

He also liked woodworking as a hobby, and would spend hours in his wood working shop making furniture as well as squirrel and bird feeders for his children. Most of all Clair loved the time spent with his grandchildren and great-granddaughter.

Living family members include his wife of 61 years, Noriene of Charles City; son Scott and Kathy (McGurn) North of Onawa; daughter, Diana (North) and Dave Schwichtenberg of Garner; grandchildren, Sarah Martindale, Lucas North and Cody Schwichtenberg; great-granddaughter, Ella Martindale; sister, Neta Peterson of Oakley, Calif.; brother-in-law, Gary Matthews; along with nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Glen and Neta; brother-in-law, Don Matthews; brother, Bob North; sisters, Patti Fairbanks, Marion Johnson and Alice Beasly; father and mother-in-law, Lawrence and Marion Matthews and grandsons, Kristopher Bo and Daniel Lee Schwichtenberg.
