Nora Springs man held in tavern shooting death

NORA SPRINGS—Dennis Loren Smith, 21, of Nora Springs, was being held in the Floyd County jail at Charles City yesterday on an open charge of murder in connection with the death late Friday of Douglas Lynn Roy, 19, of Rudd.

According to Floyd County Sheriff L.L. Lane, both men were at the Corner Tap in Nora Springs at 11:30 p.m. when Smith allegedly fired a shot from a .22 pistol at Roy.

The sheriff said the bullet struck Roy in the stomach. He was taken to a Mason City hospital, where he died.

Lane said Smith was taken into custody when he surrendered to officers at the Nora Springs police station about two hours after the shooting.

The sheriff said it was not immediately known why the shooting took place.

Services for Mr. Roy will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Rudd. Burial in Evergreen Cemetery at Rudd. He is survived by his grandmother, Mrs. Inez Roy of Rudd. Sheckler Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
