Charles City, Iowa — John M. Smith, 55, Charles City insurance man, was killed early Saturday when he was struck by an automobile driven by Orville Dold, 27, of Rome, Iowa, employee of the Iowa ordnance plant at Burlington, as Smith walked along highway 34 near Burlington. The accident occurred near the entrance to the ordnance plant.

Officers said Dold told them he was pulling out to pass another machine when his automobile struck Smith, who he said was walking on the pavement in the opposite direction.

Smith's insurance business frequently took him to distant Iowa points. His home here was at 108 Eighth avenue.

He leaves his mother, Mrs. Ella Smith, of Charles City.
