Duncan Logan Lampman, 94, of Carterville, Illinois, died Friday, December 28, 2012, at Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion, Illinois.

He was born in Black Earth, Wisconsin, on Sept. 17, 1918, to Francis Arthur and Carrie Ellen (Logan) Lampman.

He attended Charles City schools and graduated as valedictorian in 1936. He then graduated from Iowa State Teachers College in 1940 with high honors and majors in industrial arts and mathematics and a minor in physics. He earned his Masters of Science Education Degree from Southern Illinois University in 1956. He retired in June of 1986 after more than 40 years in education, most at Southern Illinois University where he was an associate professor.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Duncan is survived by his wife of 67 years, Wilma Lampman, one daughter, two granddaughters and four great-grandchildren.

There will be a committal at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 25, at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

CARTERVILLE, ILLINOIS - Duncan Lampman, 94, died Friday, December 28, 2012, in Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion.

He was born Sept. 17, 1918, in Black Earth, Wis., to Francis Arthur and Carrie Ellen (Logan) Lampman.

He attended Charles City, Iowa, public schools and graduated as a valedictorian in 1936. Duncan then graduated from Iowa State Teachers College in 1940 with high honors and majors in industrial arts and mathematics and a minor in physics. He taught industrial arts, mathematics and general science courses at the high school in Lake Mills, Iowa; Drewry Practice High School of Talladega College in Talladega, Ala.; and Franklin Junior High School of Ottumwa, Iowa.

Duncan married Wilma Lucille Abbey on May 23, 1945, in Asbury Methodist Church in Lake Mills, Iowa.

Throughout his life, Duncan gained numerous work experiences, including two YMCA camp counselor and craft instructor jobs, carpentry, a stint in the engineering department of Ottumwa's John Deere Plant, and 22 years of part-time work in the engineering department at Diagraph Bradley, where several of his ideas resulted in patents.

Duncan came to Southern Illinois University in 1954 to teach in the Vocational Technical Institute. He, along with VTI and its successors, taught courses in machine drafting and design, blueprint reading, statics and strength of materials, construction drawing, structural mechanics and safety. He made a special effort to design performance tests which would reveal student "know-how" and problem-solving abilities.

He earned his Masters of Science Education Degree from SIU in 1956. He always wanted to learn more, taking many courses throughout his life at Iowa State College, SIU and National Science Foundation offerings at the University of Houston and Bucknell University.

Duncan retired in June 1986 after 40-plus years in education from what has become the College of Applied Sciences and Arts as an associate professor.

At various times in his academic career, he accepted membership in the honorary and service fraternities of Epsilon Pi Tau, Kappa Mu Epsilon, Kappa Delta Pi, Blue Key, Iota Lambda Sigma and Phi Kappa Phi, and for many years he served as the national secretary-treasurer of the Associated Two-Year Schools in Construction.

As hobbies, he enjoyed woodworking; volunteering; refinishing heirloom furniture; gardening; and playing the clarinet in various musical groups, including the John A. Logan Community College Band, a German band, the Southern Illinois Concert Band, and earlier in the SIU Symphony Orchestra.

Duncan was a member of SIU Alumni Association and had served on the Scholarship Committee of SIU Emeritus Association.

In retirement, he was a volunteer with blood drives and "New Student Weeks" at SIU Bookstore.

Survivors include his loving wife of 67 years, Wilma Lampman; daughter and son-in-law, Linda Ann and Gordon VonQualen of Gardner; granddaughters and their husbands, Leanne and Greg Koch of Spokane, Wash., and Karen Abbey and David Bunting of North Aurora; great-grandchildren, Natalie and Carson Bunting,and Grant and Lindsay Koch; sisters-in-law, Valeda Abbey of Joice, Iowa, and Marjorie McKee of Duluth, Minn.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, in Riggin-Pillatsch and Burke Funeral Home in Carterville. Burial will be at a later date in Riverside Cemetery in Charles City, Iowa. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions can be made to Duncan Lampman Music Scholarship Fund at SIU or First United Methodist Church in Carterville. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
