INTER RUDD'S LAST VETERAN

Dr. W.H. Kennedy Was Soldier in War Between the States

RUDD, IOWA - Funeral services were at 2 o'clock at the house Friday, for Dr. W.H. Kennedy, 98, Rudd's last Civil war veteran. Military rites were administered by the American Legion. Paul Stalker, World war veteran, sang, accompanied by his daughter, Lois. Pallbearers were E.E. Stalker, Harry Ervay, E.R. Bartz, Frank Birkholz, Otto Kollman, and D.N. Ervay.

Taps were sounded with the Theodore Schindler post, No.637, in charge. The post vice commander, Superintendent I.W. Edie, read the eulogy and chaplain Ivan Bartz offered prayer. Paul Stalker read the obituary and the Rev. Will Kirwin, Methodist pastor, pronounced the benediction. The escort was formed outside of the house with the band on the side toward which the procession was to march.

School Band Plays
The squad presented arms as the coffin appeared and came to order when the coffin was placed in the hearse. The school band under the direction of Band Master Darwin T. Maurer, played. The escort formed into column in the following order: Band, colors, chaplin, and buglers, coffin and pallbearers, firing squad, mourners, American Legion and Auxiliary members and others, and marched slowly in where the cars were parked. They entered the cars and proceeded to the Rudd cemetery. The band played at the cemetery while the coffin was being carried from the hearse and placed over the grave and ceased playing after the coffin had been placed. The firing squad and Legion members formed in line facing the grave.

Survived by Children

The chaplain read from the ritual and the "Salute To The Dead" was given. Ward Hofler and June Roberts were the buglers for taps and echo.

Surviving are: his children, Mrs. Ida Earnist, Mrs. Jennie LaVerne Robeson, Otho J., and Fred E. Kennedy, all of Rudd, besides three grandchildren and six great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren. The business places were closed during the funeral time.
