CHARLES CITY, IOWA — Glenn Heitz, 94, of Charles City, died Friday, June 7, 2013, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.
Funeral services to honor the life of Glenn Heitz will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Trinity United Methodist Church. Pastor Martha Bennett of West Saint Charles United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in West Saint Charles Cemetery, rural Charles City.
Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, and Thursday at the church an hour prior to the service.
Glenn Cecil Heitz was born Feb. 7, 1919, in Floyd County, the son of George and Amanda (Theilke) Heitz. He attended country school and graduated from Charles City High School at the age of 16. A farmer by trade, he considered it a privilege to be able to tend the soil.
Glenn treasured the written word and will be remembered for the volumes of the journal he started at age 19 and continued daily until 2013. This documented the lives of his family, his community and his world.
His marriage to Gladys “Darlene” Baxter on March 20, 1949, became the main topic of the remaining chapters of his life. Added to the story were their children: Carol, Virgil, Randall and Jeanine.
Raised to believe in hard work and sharing the talents he’d been given, Glenn included many community projects in the pages of his life. Of upmost importance was sharing his strong Christian values with his church family at West St. Charles United Methodist Church.
A page from his diary is quoted at the Floyd County Fossil Prairie Center as part of a teaching exhibit that he contributed to. As secretary and member of the St. Charles Volunteer Fire Department for more than 30 years, rural fires and monthly meetings were recorded.
After retiring, Darlene and Glenn worked as a team to become Master Gardeners and were instrumental in creating the Farmer’s Market in Charles City. They supplied garden produce and baked goods until 2012. He mended books at the Charles City Library, delivered Meals on Wheels, called bingo at Cedar Health nursing home, loved the challenges of a new woodworking project, joined in community Bible studies and enjoyed singing in community choirs. Glenn was a 4-H leader and lifelong member of the Farm Bureau.
Glenn is survived by his wife, Darlene Heitz of Charles City; three children: Carol (Bill) Schmidt of Rudd, Randall (Marilyn) Heitz and Jeanine (Joe) Tudor both of Charles City; nine grandchildren: Emily (Jim) Massey, Alyson (Aaron) Baltes, Derek (Carri) Heitz, Monica Heitz, Jessica (Stuart) Hall, Alex (Rosnee) Heitz, Amy Heitz, Eric Tudor and Aaron Tudor; five great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Linda Heitz of Lee’s Summit, Mo.; and a sister, Velma (Donald) Schlick of Charles City.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Virgil Heitz; and two sisters: Lois Frankenfield and Lorraine Fox.
Because of allergies, the family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials be directed to the family or to an organization of choice.
