Rick E. Pitkin, 62, of Oxford, Iowa, died peacefully on Saturday, December 29, 2012, surrounded by his family.

A gathering of friends and family took place January 2, 2013, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City.

Rick was born July 20, 1950, in Mason City, Iowa, the son of Francis "Sonny" and Iris (Steinfeldt) Pitkin. After high school, Rick served four years in the U.S. Navy, spending time on the aircraft carrier USS Shangri-La. A few years later, on Nov. 15, 1979, he married the love of his life, Sherri McIntire. Rick was a hard worker and often held multiple jobs at a time -- alongside his career at the VA Hospital in Iowa City, he'd work construction, landscaping and various other positions.

Living family members include his wife, Sherri; children Matthew (Jennifer) Pitkin and Ashley (Vince) Klopfenstein; grandchildren Casen, Ava and Jon; mother Iris Pitkin, of Charles City; and siblings: Debbie Parkis, Denise Bledsoe of Charles City, Lisa Griffin, Rand Pitkin of Charles City, Scott Pitkin, Stacey Ott and Susan Glessner.

Rick was preceded in death by his father, Francis "Sonny" Pitkin.

Memorial contributions in Rick's name can be made to the American Heart Association or to the Rick Pitkin Memorial Fund, which will be used for a memorial in his name at F.W. Kent Park where his family spent much of their time.
