Bertha Louise Gulbrandsen was born April 26, 1874 at rural Nora Springs, Floyd County, Iowa to Gulbrand Lundberg Gulbrandsen (February 8, 1828 Hurdalen, Akershus, Norway - April 9, 1902 Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa) and Anne Olsdatter Wamstad (Hvamstad) (October 11, 1833 Hvamstad, Tingelstad, Hadeland, Oppland, Norway - October 14, 1902 Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa) the fifth of their six children. Her siblings were: Lars, Gilles, Martin Adolph, Anna Olava Mathilda, and Martha Marie.

Bertha was baptized at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church at Meroa, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa on May 31, 1874. Baptismal sponsors were: Ander O. Vamstad; Lars H. Vamstad; Martin L. Joneiog (sp?); Johanne P. Jos (sp?).

Found in the 1880 & 1885 censuses living at Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa:
1880: Gilbert Gulbrantson 52, Anna Gulbrantson 46, Lars Gulbrantson 16, Gillas Gulbrantson 13, Martin Gulbrantson 11, Oleva Gulbrantson 9, Bertha Gulbrantson 6, Martha Gulbrantson 4.

1885: Gulbrand Gulbrandson 57, Anna Gulbrandson 51, Lars Gulbrandson 21, Gilas Gulbrandson 18, Martin Gulbrandson 18, Tilda Gulbrandson 14, Louisa Gulbrandson 11, Martha Gulbrandson 8.

Bertha married Oscar Carl Johnson on November 25, 1897 at Rock Creek Lutheran Church, Meroa, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa. They had 9 children. Bertha was a teacher in North Dakota.

1920: Oscar Johnson 49, Louise Johnson 45, Melvin Johnson 21, Archie Johnson 19, Cora Johnson 17, Victor Johnson 15, Elmer Johnson 13, Irene Johnson 12, Olaf Johnson 10, Hazel Johnson 8, Florence Johnson 5, Bernhard Nelson 32.

1930: Oscar Johnson 60, Louise Johnson 55, Cora L Johnson 27, Victor C Johnson 25, Olaf R Johnson 20, Hazel B Johnson 18, Florence Johnson 15, Clifford Frovarp 20. Found in the 1940 census at Park River, Walsh, North Dakota: Oscar Johnson 70, Bertha L Johnson 65, Olaf R Johnson 32.

Bertha died May 5, 1967 at Park River, Walsh, North Dakota. and is buried at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Park River, Walsh, North Dakota.

Obituary: Louise Gulbrandsen grew up on a farm where she was born near Nora Springs, Floyd, Iowa. She attended the Cedar Valley Seminary in Osage, Iowa, and then was a teacher in rural schools in North Dakota. While in North Dakota she also attended the University of North Dakota. Later three of her grandchildren graduated from that University - Penny Legrid, Lorraine Paulson and Thomas Clairmont. Louise's son , Elmer C. Johnson, was the first one in the family to graduate from the University of North Dakota.

While in North Dakota she met Oscar Johnson whom she married in her home Church (Rock Creek Lutheran) in Meroa, Iowa in 1897. They farmed near Park River, ND, until they retired in 1935 and purchased a home in Park River, ND.

Louise and Oscar celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary at Zion Church and their Maid of Honor, Miss Della Wamstad and their Best Man, Gillis Gulbrandsen were able to be present. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson and son Archie are buried in the rural Cemetery northeast of Park River, near where they farmed for years, Zion Church Cemetery.
