Charles City, Iowa — Gerald “Gary” W. Sellon, 62, of Charles City, died Monday, March 4, 2013, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 8, at St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S.E., with Scott Elsbury and Pastor Jeni Bohls of St. James Lutheran Church officiating.

A gathering of friends and family will be held from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. Inurnment will be at a later date.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Gary W. Sellon Memorial Fund in care of the family that will be directed for pulmonary research.

Gerald "Gary" W. Sellon passed away from complications from pulmonary fibrosis on March 4, 2013, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.

He was born on December 21, 1950, to Shirley Elaine (Adams) Sellon and Keith John Sellon in Charles City. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1969 and enlisted in the Navy on March 28, 1971, and served on the USS George Mackenzie until he was honorably discharged on March 26, 1973.

He married Jody Suby on September 4, 1976, and had three wonderful children. Gary enjoyed fishing in his younger days spending time at the family cabin in Minnesota. He was actively involved in his children’s sports activities coaching his son’s baseball team for several years.

He was always in attendance at all the childrens’ and grandchildrens’ events. Gary loved brewing beer with his brother-in-law, taking part in the Isaak Walton League, as well as playing every fantasy sport imaginable. Every day in the summer Gary was known to sit in his lawn chair to get a tan, drink a good scotch, and smoke a fine cigar with his wife. He retired from Alliant Energy in 2010. In his retired days he enjoyed coffee clubs at Jitters, having four gardens, and helping anyone and everyone with whatever they needed. Gary and Jody loved to travel, especially to Key West, Fla., for the atmosphere, people, and most of all, the ocean. He will be greatly missed by all of those he touched.

He survived by, his wife Jody (Suby) Sellon, children Ryan (Amy) Sellon, Larkin (Jayson) Becker, and Courtney Sellon, Sister Gloria (Darrel) Hesley, and five grandchildren, Cole, Jaxon, Jace, Lily, and Kenadi.

He is preceded in death by his parents Shirley and Keith Sellon.
