KNOWLEN RITES TO BE SATURDAY AT CHARLES CITY

Charles City, Iowa – Reburial services for Pvt. William J. Knowlen, who died in a Japanese prison camp June 8, 1944, will be at Grossmann’s Chapel at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Capt. Clara Spargo of the Salvation Army will officiate and burial will be in the Floyd Cemetery with military rites by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Floyd American Vets.
The cremated remains were to arrive here Friday.

Born at Floyd, March 4, 1919, he attended school there and entered the army July 29, 1941. Mr. Knowlen served in the coast artillery at Fort Mills, Phillippine Island, and was taken prisoner at Corregidor, May 7, 1942.
He was transferred to a prison camp at Osaka, Japan, where he died from pulmonary tuberculosis.

Survivors include his mother Mrs. Olive Bogart, Charls City; and two sisters; Mildred Townsend, Olympa, Washington and Gertrude Niensteadt, Charles City. His father, James D. Knowlen, died March 9, 1948.
