MRS. SCHMIDT FUNERAL HELD
ROCKFORD RESIDENT, WHO WAS MOTHER OF 15, IOWA PIONEER

Rockford – Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Schmidt, for many years a resident of Rockford, who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Bertha White, Thursday were held at the White home Saturday afternoon. The Rev. C. G. Fort, pastor of the Methodist Church, was in charge of the service with burial in Elmwood Cemetery. (**probably Riverside Rockford where her husband Christian and son are buried and not Elmwood)

Mrs. Schmidt, who was Mary Linden before her marriage, was the youngest of a family of nine children. She was born in Middledarf, Germany, June 29, 1846.

When 9, she, with her mother and brother started for this country to join her father in Potosi, Wisconsin, and were booked to sail from Antwerp, Belgium, but the vessel was delayed for four weeks and during this time the mother became ill and died and the son and daughter made the trip here alone, spending 40 days on the ocean.

She grew to womanhood at Potosi and there was married to Christian Myers in April, 1864, and they came to Iowa, settling on a farm in the Flood Creek neighborhood, where her husband built the first Flood Creek Methodist church.

After 12 years the family moved in to Rockford. Her husband died November 3, 1908, and on September 3, 1915, she was married to Phillip Schmidt, who died January 6, 1919. Mrs. Schmidt was a member of the Methodist Church.

She was the mother of 15 children, four of whom died in infancy and four after reaching adult age.

The surviving relatives are her daughters; Mrs. Bertha White, Rockford; Mrs. Herbert Gregory, Charles City; Mrs. Clarence Johnston, Piedmont, California; Mrs. George Reynolds, Winchester Bay, Oregon; Mrs. Josephine Cone, Hayward, California; Mrs. Gertrude Howson, Berkley, California; and one son; Roy Myers, Oakland, California. She is also survived by 18 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
