Martin Harm Mehmen – November 2, 1876 – October 13, 1948

Rockford – Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Lutheran Church for Martin Harm Mehmen, 71, who died at his home here Wednesday after a long illness. Burial will be in Rockford Cemetery.

He was born November 2, 1876, in Germany, coming to this county at 17 and settling near Parkersburg. In 1909 he married Susie Wiebrands at Grundy Center and the couple moved to Minnesota. They returned to Iowa in 1933 and have lived in Rockford since.

He leaves his widow, four brothers; Harm and Henry, Charles City; Bill, Clarksville; and Jake, Parkersburg; three sisters; Mrs. John Siems; Mrs. Tom Baker, both of Parkersburg; and Mrs. Will Reverts, Shell Rock; 10 children; John Mehmen, Marble Rock; Mrs. Susie Tumilson; Bill Mehmen; Mrs. Gertrude Welshans; Mrs. Katherine Welshans; William; Caroline; Alice and Ann, all of Rockford; and eight grandchildren.

Mehme “Martin” Harm Mehmen was born November 2, 1876 in Germany, the son of Jann G. Mehmen and Afkea “Effie” (Eilers) Mehmen.

He married Zwantje “Susie” Afkea Wiebrands , the daughter of Willem Wiebrands and Swantje “Susie” Borchers.

Dutch Immigrants: He departed from Rotterdam arrived in New York Harbor on September 25, 1893.

*Their actual first names are from birth/christening records for a couple of their children born in Iowa.
