Evelyn Margaret Schuver was born on January 21, 1921 in Remsen, Iowa, the daughter of Nicholas and Rose (Jungers) Schuver. She attended Nora Springs High School and graduated amongst the class of 1938. While in high school Evelyn was the first North Iowa Band Queen candidate to represent Nora Springs. Following her graduation Evelyn worked at State Brand Creamery.

On October 14, 1944 Evelyn was united in marriage to Thomas Vala in Rockford; this union would be blessed with four children. Thomas and Evelyn made their home on the family farm outside of Rockford, where Evelyn would help Thomas on the farm and raise their children. Visitors were always welcome in Evelyn’s home and she made sure that they never left without first enjoying a home cooked meal.

Nursing was Evelyn’s life calling, and once her children entered junior high she enrolled in the LPN program at Mason City Junior College in Mason City. Evelyn began her nursing career at the Rockford Convalescent Home before accepting a position at the Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City where she would work until her retirement. Although Evelyn initially thought she was ready for retirement, she would prove that she still had many years of caring for others in front of her. She accepted a position as the night charge nurse at the Nora Springs Care Center and then with Mercy Home Health Care, where she was employed until the age of 85!

Throughout the years Evelyn enjoyed quilting and sewing, she was a magnificent cook and was eager to find and try new recipes. She was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church in Rockford, as well as the Friendship Community Club, TOPS, and KOPS. Evelyn was never afraid to embrace new opportunities and displayed tremendous selflessness and compassion throughout her life. She served as an inspiration to many.

Those grateful in sharing in her life are her children, Michael Vala, Marble Rock, Teresa (Roger) Trettin, Rockford, and Timothy (Donna) Vala, Portland, Texas; her grandchildren, Melissa Gaylord, John Dean, Christiane Dean, Kelly Cunningham, Jennifer Vala, and John Vala; great grandchildren, Emily Gaylord, Matthew Vala, Kenneth Cunningham, and Joseph Cunningham; four step grandchildren; seven step great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Thomas; daughter, Rosemary Vala; and brothers, Harold Schuver and Norbert Schuver.
