Minnie Caroline (Karsten Rohlwing – November 23, 1861 – January 12, 1949

ROHLWING FUNERAL HELD AT ROCKFORD SATURDAY AFTERNOON

Funeral services were held from the Rockford Methodist Church Saturday afternoon, January 15, for Mrs. Minnie Rohlwing, conducted by the Rev. F. A. Smith, pastor of the church at Northwood. Mrs. Rohlwing was a former resident of Bennezette Township and has many friends in this vicinity. Burial was made in Riverside Cemetery, Rockford.

Minnie Caroline Karsten Rohlwing, daughter of Frederick and Marie Karsten, was born in the Gut Leifendorf near Rostock, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany, on November 23, 1861.

In October of 1863, Mrs. Rohlwing, her parents, and her two brothers, boarded a sail ship to come to the United States. Her father contracted pneumonia and was buried in the Atlantic. After 14 weeks at sea, the widow her family landed in New York City. They made their home with a cousin and his family at Elgin, Illinois. In 1865 they settled at Dundee, Illinois and after a short time, her mother remarried. The family then came to Bremer County, Iowa, where they settled on a farm and Mrs. Rohlwing grew to womanhood.

She was confirmed a member of the Crane Creek Lutheran Church near Tripoli. As a young woman she worked in Waverly until her marriage to John C. Rohlwing on October 26, 1882 at the Crane Creek Lutheran Church.

Three children were born to this union. They started farming near Rockford. Five years later they moved to a farm in Bennezette Township, Butler County, where they resided until 1909. They then moved back to a farm east of Rockford.

Mrs. Rohlwing, 87, passed away Wednesday afternoon, January 12th, after a siege of influenza and pneumonia.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband on December 8, 1941, two brothers; John and Fred Karsten; one step-brother; three step-sisters, Mrs. Minnie Kohagon of Waterloo and Mrs. Anna Young of Minneapolis. One son, Ernest B Rohlwing of Richland, Washington, and two daughters; Mrs. Anna Sebaugh of Nora Springs; and Mrs. Nellie Nagel, wife of Albert Nagel of Nora Springs.
