Clarence, a longtime resident of Marble Rock, was born on December 19, 1912, to John and Anna (Yunk) Staudt and died peacefully Sunday evening, August 26, 2012, in his retirement home, Windmill Pointe, Coralville, Iowa. He lived on the Staudt farm his entire life until his recent move to Coralville.

He received his education in the St. Mary's and Marble Rock schools and was engaged in farming until he entered the army in September 1942. Following his basic training, he volunteered for the paratroopers and served with the 82nd Airborne Division in Europe and North Africa.

Clarence was always proud of his service record. He was the recipient of several medals and honors. He received an honorable discharge as a Staff Sergeant in September 1945.

On November 25, 1946, Clarence was united in marriage to Evelyn Friedrichs Merfeld at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City. Clarence was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, American Legion Post 387 of Marble Rock, Rockford Golf and Country Club, past member of the Moose Lodge, Elks Club and Lions Club. He farmed full-time until his retirement in 1977 but continued to help out on the farm into his late 80s. During his retirement, Clarence enjoyed doing small woodworking projects and crafts.

Clarence and Evelyn enjoyed many years of retirement, taking trips with the Heritage Club throughout the United States and Canada. Clarence also enjoyed driving and made frequent trips visiting their out-of-state children and going to their winter home in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, each year.
