Mayme (O’Connor) Duster Vala – August 10, 1885 – November 5, 1962

MRS. VALA RITES SET AT NORA SPRINGS

Nora Springs – Mrs. Frank (Mayme) Vala, 77, died Monday night at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mrs. And Mrs. Ruben Moos, Nora Springs, where she had made her home the past three years. Death was attributed to a heart attack, following a one day illness.

The funeral will be at 9 a.m. Thursday at the Holy Name Catholic church in Rockford, of which she was a member. The celebrant will be Father Carl Manternach of New Haven, administrator of the parish. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery at Remsen, Iowa. The rosary will be said at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Sheckler Funeral Home, Nora Springs.

Mrs. Vala, nee Mayme O’Connor, the eldest of four children of Patrick and Margaret (Kennedy) O’Connor, was born August 10, 1885 at Worthington, Minnesota.

She was married to Frank Duster of Remsen at Wilmont, Minnesota, May 26, 1909. Two daughters were born to them, Vivian and Maxine. The latter died in infancy.

The Dusters moved to Remsen soon after their marriage and resided there until January 1929 when they moved to Fairfax, South Dakota, where Mr. Duster published the Fairfax Advertiser. He died there July 16, 1935.

Mrs. Duster moved to Nora Springs in February 1928 and lived here until her marriage to Frank Vala of Rockford, February 4, 1950. They made their home in Edinburg, Texas, until Mr. Valas’ death on January 12, 1960. Since then she has lived in Nora Springs.

She is survived by her daughter; Mrs. Ruben (Vivian) Moos of Nora Springs; her sister, Mrs. Roy (Winifred) Smith of Staunton, Virginia; one brother Jack O’Connor of Aberdeen, South Dakota; three stepchildren; Mrs. Ray Reeta and Toma Vala, Rockford; and Mrs. Tom Neenan, Center Point. A brother, R. J. O’Connor, Portland, Oregon preceded her in death August 31, 1962
