James Marshall – December 13, 1843 – December 8, 1900

#1

Obituary---James Marshall was born in Quebec Canada, December 13, 1843. His father George Marshall was a native of Yorkshire England. James Marshall's early life was spent on a farm. His education was received in the common schools. He went to New York State in 1863, from there to DeKalb County, Illinois in 1864; to Black Hawk County Iowa in 1865, and to this county (Floyd) in 1872.

He first settled on section 20, this township. From there he went to a farm 2 1/2 miles northwest of Nora Springs and from the farm he moved to Nora Springs where he died Dec. 8, 1900.

James Marshall married Miss Josephine Forbes, Oct 14, 1873, To them were born eight children, seven of them are now living; William H., Nellie M. Schultz, James B., George F., Cora E., Josephine M., and Ruth G.Marshall.

The death of James Marshall removes from our midst one of the more energetic and successful business men of our town. He worked early and late; by economy and management, he became owner of considerable property.

Six weeks ago he was taken sick and gradually grew weaker. He was seemingly unconscious of his suffering most of the time. At about 10 o'clock Saturday morning Dec. 8, 1900 he passed away.

The funeral services at the M.E. church on Sabbath at 2 p.m. were very largely attended. Neighbors and friends, members of the order of Odd Fellows to whom he was much attached, and members of the Methodist church where he was considered a member of the congregation, asserted to do honor to his memory. The pastor, Rufus D. Black, preached from the text.Ps 46-1 "God is a refuge to us." Mr. Marshall had desired prayer and been comforted by it. His pastor and others prayed with and for him.
At his funeral there were relatives from distance. Among them were Mr. and Mrs. Henry Marshall LaPort City, Mr. William Marshall, Waterloo and their sister.
