CHARLES CITY, IOWA - Ray Steward, 88, of Charles City, died Friday, June 8, 2012, at the Floyd County Medical Center, Charles City.

Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 13, in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City. Officiant will be Pastor Dennis Niezwaag of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Charles City. Full military honors will be conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit. Friends may greet the family 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at the Hauser Funeral Home, Charles City.

The Hauser Funeral Home, in Charles City, 641-228-2323, is in charge of arrangements.

Ray Steward, 88, of Charles City died Friday, June 08, 2012, at the Floyd County Medical Center, Charles City. Ray Donald Steward was born March 4, 1924, in Auburn, Ind., the son of Arthur and Stella (Blair) Steward. He graduated from Auburn High School in 1942. On November 28, 1942, he was united in marriage to Hildamae Mitchner at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Auburn. To this union, three children were born.

Ray was inducted into the United States Army on January 6, 1943, and served as a Private until he was honorably discharged. After returning from his service, he began work for International Harvester as a draftsman. He then began working for the Dana Corporation, working on Indy 500 cars. Ray began working as a mechanical engineer employed by the J.I. Case Company. This career led him to Charles City, where he worked at Oliver from 1962 until his retirement in 1989. In his free time, he would often be found golfing with his son Pat or his friends. He enjoyed watching high school girls softball, listening to music, and drawing. Ray had the longest continuous membership to the American Legion, was a foster grandparent, and also served on their advisory board for over 22 years.

Living family members include three children, Pat Steward, Toni Pieper, both of Charles City, Amy (Randy) Caster of Plainfield; three grandchildren, Joseph (Stephanie) Acord of Oklahoma City, Okla., James Acord of Norman, Okla., Brent Steward of Charles City; three great-grandchildren, Courtney, Cadon, and Marissa; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Hildamae in 2007; a sister, Thelma Deihl; a brother, James in infancy; and a son-in-law, Bob Pieper.
