ROCKFORD, IOWA - Jerald Montag, 82, of 306 First Avenue N.W. in Rockford, died Sunday, June 3, 2012, at Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., with a one-hour prior visitation, on Wednesday, June 6, at Holy Name Church, 507 First Ave. N.W., Rockford, Iowa. Father Rodney Allers will be officiating. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Rockford following the funeral Mass.
A visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. today, Tuesday, June 5, at Holy Name Church with a Rosary Service at 7:30 p.m.

Jerald Jerome Montag was born on August 25, 1925, in West Bend to parents Joseph and Frances (Forgarty) Montag. He graduated from West Bend High School. After high school, he worked at Montag Brothers Garage in West Bend, and then worked at Montag Electric. He was drafted into service and joined the Marines in 1952 and was honorably discharged in 1954. Jerry went into farming in the Nora Springs area. He also substituted as a rural mail carrier in Osage. He served on the Nora Springs Elevator Board.

On August 5, 1958, Jerry married Alberta Paulus at Holy Name Catholic Church in Rockford. To this union three children were born: Ann, Jay, and David.

Jerry was a member of Holy Name Church and served as a trustee and then on the Parish Council. He served various positions; as Lector, Usher, and Eucharisitic Minister.

Jerry enjoyed playing cards, drinking coffee with the men at the station, delivering mail, and visiting with everybody. He was definitely a talker. He also enjoyed reading, especially westerns. Jerry will be very missed by his family and friends.

Jerry is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Alberta, of Rockford; his daughter, Ann (John) Shurtz, of Mason City and son, Jerald (Myrna) Montag of Albert Lea; daughter-in-law, Julie Montag of Nora Springs; brother, Richard (Patty) Montag of Colo, Iowa, and sister, Anna Zita (Rex) Brown of West Bend; sister-in-laws, Dorothy Montag of Nora Springs and Mary Montag of West Bend; grandchildren, Clayton, Gregory, Ana and Jeffrey Shurtz, Jacqueline (Alan) Attig and Jonathon Montag; step-grandchild, Callie (Dana) Hillman; great-granddaughter, Alana Attig; and step-great-granddaughters, Hannah and Harper Hillman.

He was preceded in death by his son, David Montag; his parents; brothers, James, Thomas, Maurice, Vincent, and Emmet Montag; sisters, Helen Ladd and Mary Bea Besch; and sister-in-laws, Gretchen and Irene Montag.
